I think stealth camping is very common especially for the train riders that I know. One of the main key elements in my opinion is the action or art of " out of sight = out of mind " I have a host of different things I will do or items I can use to help me stay stealthy, especially when I am sleeping. Have slept on roof's, behind bushes, in places most people wouldn't imagine however so have most train hoppers.

I have been doing stealth camping in Finland a lot. One of my best bets has always been to drive my car to a parking lot of a police station and sleep in my car, if someone comes knocking, 95% chance that it is a police officer, and i have always been well off if i have said that i was almost sleeping at the wheel and i needed to get a little bit of sleep in order not to crash my car. Also, i have slept in a hammock in unused stairwells, rooftops, etc. you just have to be creative and clever. And also check google to see the unwelcome spots in places you are intending to sleep, every city and town has their hotspots where hooligans and drug addicts tend to hang out.

I'm considering stealth camping in Japan.. I'm currently building a camouflage one man tent for this. It will be low and small.

I love the idea of stealth camping! Total freedom!

Has anybody stealth camped in Japan? I know it's become quiet a thing there but I"m not sure if the police have cracked down on it yet. I know they've moved allot of homeless people on according to someone I spoke to here in Australia just the other day.

I want to travel through Japan but stealth camp as much as possible. It will save me a heap of money given the cost of accommodation over there!

If the police get involved then you're obviously not being stealthy enough ;)
Danman
Well this is true! I suppose that's what separates the common 'urban camping' from 'stealth camping' .
Brave_Dave
Yeah, it's a bit more tricky to urban camp. I've only done it a few times, and that was when I was doing freight hops. I've found that the best thing to do in a city when you need to sleep is to find some railway tracks. They're private and fenced off, so you won't be disturbed by anyone in the night or dog walkers in the morning, and there's plenty of undergrowth to hide amongst.
Danman
Yep, good tip!. With all the train noise I suppose it will be less likely that a wild bear will be chomping down on my feet sometime during the night (depending where I go of course).

one thing i found is cover your angle: if they can't see you they can't found you
and the most important thing is to get out before people wake up: early bird get the worm
Danman
Yes, I figured it would mean early mornings. I will choose my places very carefully!
